Nitrous Oxide |
||
Hi Resident
Recently I have noticed an increase in finding nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas or balloons) canisters out and about. This includes local residents alerting myself to them finding nitrous oxide cannisters lying around the streets. I just want to highlight what nitrous oxide actually is and the dangers of it when it is used with the incorrect intentions.
Nitrous oxide is a drug used in the medical field and in food production for things such as pain relievers, and whipping cream. When used in a recreational manner illegally, it creates a quick ‘high’ feeling which is why it appeals to people. This ‘high’ is a sense of euphoria, relaxation and derealisation. What this really means is that it stops oxygen reaching the brain, causes fainting, brain damage, confusion, suffocation and many other health risks. Along with this, when inhaled directly from the canister, rather than balloons, because it is an extremely cold gas, can freeze your lungs and throat which leads to death. The government has said that the misuse of nitrous oxide was mainly found within people between the ages of 16-24 so if you know anyone around this age, please spread the message.
The high you get from nitrous oxide is very short lived as you stop feeling anything the second you stop inhaling it, so isn't worth the high feeling at all. And it is illegal to inhale nitrous oxide for recreational purposes and to sell it for inhalation as it is a class C drug.
Not only are there consequences to those inhaling it, but it also affects the community as the canisters are littered around quite heavily in some areas which contributes to anti-social behaviour.
If you do find any canisters, please let me know and I will dispose of them correctly.
Thank you, | ||
